The Italian teams such as Juventus, Roma and Lazio have taken European competitions very seriously this season.
Although two of those teams have been eliminated, Roma has surpassed all expectations and beaten one of the strongest teams of all time, FC Barcelona. Lazio on the other hand lost to Red Bull Salzburg today in the Europa League quarter finals 4-1, resulting in a 6-5 aggregate loss.
Juventus, in the Champions League succumbed to Real Madrid after completing an amazing comeback and win 3-0 in Madrid. The first leg finished 3-0 in Turin and everybody said that it was over. Nobody expected Juventus to bounce back and almost claim a win in Madrid.
Sadly, in the 95th minute, Benatia fouled Lucas Vazquez in the box- resulting in a controversial decision that gave Madrid a penalty. Ronaldo successfully converted the penalty in the 98th minute giving Madrid a pass to the semifinals.
Italian teams were highly underrated this season and showed that they should be considered as one of the top leagues in Europe. Teams such as Inter Milan and AC Milan have yet to regain their years of glory and take back control of Europe.
Underdogs such as Roma have introduced a new view to Italian football, which has taken a dramatic fall in the past years with only Juventus taking a stand against formidable German and Spanish teams. The last time an Italian team has won the Champions league was back in 2010 when Inter Milan triumphed over Bayern Munich 2-0 with Milito scoring a brace.
The revamp of Italian teams has slowly been occurring with teams such as Napoli last year putting up a fight against Real Madrid and Juventus has made the Champions League finals in 2017 and 2015. Both times, they succumbed to mighty Spanish teams such as Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Although Italian teams have not been so successful in recent years, there is an uprising going on and I hope to see the top Italian teams compete in the European competitions and achieve great success.
