Heung Min Son is one of the most under-rated players in the Premier League. He has scored more Premier League goals this season than Eden Hazard, Anthony Martial, Gabriel Jesus, and Alexis Sanchez.
The 2017/2018 season marks Son’s third Premier League campaign. Son arrived at White Hart Lane from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and pledged to play a “bold and daring” style of football. In his 3 seasons at Spurs the South Korean’s play has certainly been bold and daring. Son has deputized for Harry Kane adamantly when Kane has missed time due to injuries and will to do so again after Kane suffered a knock to his ankle against Bournemouth.
Pochettino to the Rescue
Son, like most Spurs players owes a lot of his success to manager Mauricio Pochettino. After his first Premier League season Son wanted to leave North London due to a lack of playing time. Pochettino had a conversation with Son and convinced him to stay at Spurs for the 2016/2017 season and it was a pivotal moment for both the player and Spurs. That season saw him score 21 goals in all competitions, setting the record for highest goals scored in a season by a South Korean.
The Korean winger has built off last season, scoring 18 goals and assisting on 9 other so far in this campaign. His form is red-hot, having scored 7 goals in his past 4 matches. Son finds himself second only to Harry Kane in goals involved in this season for Tottenham. If Son’s scintillating form continues he could set a career high for goals scored.
Heung Min Son is underrated at his own club and overall in the Premier League. Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld, and Eric Dier are the Spurs players most often linked with transfers. Every week Kane is linked with a move to Real Madrid to chase trophies. Dier was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this past summer. Dele Alli’s name often pops up linked with several clubs. Alderweireld’s contract situation will likely not be sorted until after the season ends. Son is the forgotten man even though he would be an asset to any club in the Premier League.
The case can be made for him being the most underrated player in the Premier League by looking at the other ‘Top 6’ clubs. Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata of Chelsea have each scored fewer goals than Son. Alexis Sanchez of Manchester United has only 8 Premier League goals so far in the season. Arsenal big money signing Alexzandre Lacazette’s 9 Premier goals trail Son by three. The electrifying Manchester City duo of Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane both trail Son by 4 goals in the Premier League. Liverpool’s Sadio Mane completes the list with his 8 goals trailing Son by 4 as well. Weekly salary is the main category he trails the above mentioned players.
Will Son Rise to the Occasion?
Son’s goal scoring statistics speak for themselves and he continues to get better with each passing season in North London. Harry Kane’s absence provides an opportunity to rise to the occasion and pick up the goal scoring load while Kane’s ankle mends.
