Memphis Depay was the standout performer as Lyon dispatched of Metz in Ligue 1 5-0 on Sunday.
Depay is an enigmatic talent, who has the ability to win a match with individual brilliance. He also has the tendency to frustrate his teammates, manager and fans. This was not the case in Sundays Ligue 1 clash, as he scored one and assisted four more.
Lyon are in with a change to grab that coveted Champions League spot in France, currently battling it out with Marseille for 3rd place.
This emphatic win over Metz has continued their fine run of form, their 4th Ligue 1 victory in a row. Depay has now scored 13 goals this season, with 4 coming in his last 3 matches. The Dutch winger curated the 2-0 lead Lyon took into half time with 2 assists from corners for defender Marcelo to finish off.
Depay got himself on the scoresheet after half time, before teeing up both Bertrand Traore and substute Mariano Diaz for the 4th and 5th goals of the game respectively.
Metz continue to be rooted to the bottom of the table, with just 22 points from the 32 league games that have been played. Chances of survival are slim, they are 8 points off of safety in Toulouse and with only 6 games to play the situation is looking bleak.
It doesn’t get any easier for Les Grenats, with their next fixture away at 5th placed Rennes. Whilst Lyon host midtable Amiens at the Groupama Stadium.
Depay and his Lyon teammates will be hoping to continue their run of form and hope that Marseille slip up in the mean time to put themselves in pole position for next seasons elite european competition.
