With over twenty years at Dundee United Maurice Malpas is the definition of a one club cult hero.
Joining in 1979 Malpas remained part time until 1984 as he worked towards a degree in electrical engineering. Before going full time he had already won a league title with United in 1983 and was well on his way to establishing himself as one of the best Scottish fullbacks of the age.
Having made 830 competitive appearances for Dundee United Malpas was rewarded with two separate testimonials in 1991 and 2000. His achievements with the club are unparalleled as they reached both the semi-final of the European Cup in 1984 and the final of the UEFA Cup in 1987. Domestically along with the league title in 1983 Malpas secured the Scottish Cup in 1994 after collecting four runners up medals in the preceding decade.
Malpas played with distinction for Scotland collecting 55 caps appearing at two World Cups and the European Championship in 1992. Unsurprisingly Malpas was one of the inaugural members of the Dundee United hall of fame announced in 2008 and was also inducted in the Scottish Football hall of fame in 2015.
A successful career both domestically and internationally Malpas turned down opportunities to leave Dundee United at various points during his career.
For a club that currently sits in the Scottish Championship the team is crying out for more cult hero’s like Malpas who will give everything for the club and try and return them to silverware days of the eighties and nineties. For now the Dundee United fans just have the memories of an outstanding full back who gave two decades to the club
